The Kootenay Cabin, located in Golden, British Columbia, was designed by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects and built by HR Pacific. Set within a forested site, the project reflects a balance of craft, honesty in the use of materials, and precision construction.
The exterior is clad in Corten steel, with panels pre-weathered and aligned to maintain a consistent tone and crisp shadow lines. HR Pacific planned panel layout and installation sequencing to ensure the surface aged evenly and retained the architect’s intended proportions. The steel shell forms a continuous protective skin that connects the cabin to its alpine surroundings.
Inside, board-formed concrete establishes a grounded base for the structure, while vertical-grain fir millwork softens the tone of the interior. HR Pacific coordinated junctions between wood, concrete, and steel to exact tolerances, achieving continuity between materials. Structural and architectural steel define the great room’s gable trusses, stair rail, and fireplace surround.
The interior sequence includes a cedar-lined sauna, a kitchen and living area with expansive glazing, and private rooms that open to the forest. HR Pacific’s role centered on executing the architect’s minimalist intent with accuracy suited to the cabin’s remote mountain setting.
