The Blenheim Residence, also known as the CLT Courtyard House, is a two-storey cross-laminated timber (CLT) home located in Vancouver, British Columbia. Designed by DPo Architecture and completed in 2017, the project was recognized with the 2016 Wood Design Award for Residential Wood Design.
The residence was built for three generations of one family: the owners, their daughter, and two grandchildren. It consists of a 2,600-square-foot main house and a 475-square-foot laneway coach house. The arrangement of both structures creates a courtyard that frames views of downtown Vancouver and the surrounding mountains.
The home’s structure uses prefabricated CLT panels for both walls and floors, eliminating the need for steel beams or columns. Exposed CLT surfaces provide natural warmth and texture, while the material’s acoustic, thermal, and seismic properties enhance overall performance. Concrete floors with radiant heat, blackened steel cladding, and a green roof garden combine to create a design that balances environmental awareness with refined craftsmanship. The residence also includes roughed-in conduits for future solar panels, supporting a long-term goal of operating on renewable energy.
