Flip Flop Cabin

Residential

The Flip Flop Cabin is a West Coast Modern home built by HR Pacific in 2015 on Lake Windermere in the Columbia Valley. Designed by Peter Buchanan of North Architecture Studio, the residence was conceived as a family getaway with a design that reflects the character of a lakeside retreat. Its nickname, “Flip Flop Cabin,” comes from the lifestyle it evokes, with roof lines, views of the water, and a relaxed approach to resort living.

The structure incorporates fir glulam beams that span the full length of the open-concept interior, creating wide and uninterrupted spaces. Fir cross laminated timber roof panels allow for generous overhangs and contribute to the light, open quality of the home. These mass timber components define the architectural expression and demonstrate the use of advanced wood construction systems.

Quarried bluestone and basalt are integrated into the home and landscape, establishing a durable and natural connection to the site. Through its design and execution, the Flip Flop Cabin combines modern architectural language, advanced timber construction, and regional materials into a custom residence on Windermere Lake.
